It's an ink cartridge.
I've been impressed with Fisher Space Pens for approximately a decade. I was given one as a birthday gift after remarking on the quality and design when a friend lent me his Space Pen. Once or twice every three or so years, I have to replace the ink cartridge. I previously ordered replacements directly from Fisher, but decided to shop around this time. Ordering through Amazon, I received the same replacement cartridge, a comparable price, decent shipping time and consolidated my online purchasing just a little more (one less website to remember, one less "account" for which to dig up a password or spend five more minutes entering shipping and CC details).
Not much more to say than that. I wish every pen used Fisher ink cartridges. The feel, the consistency, they really are unparalleled.
And yes, you really can write under water, or inside a -40 degrees C walk-in freezer, with these. I've used them in both environments. When and where other pens stop working, these are reliable.
